A great distinction for the Greek scientific community was the award for the poster of the 3rd University Pediatric Clinic of the Hippocratic Hospital of Thessaloniki, under the supervision of Professor Chanakas and Assistant Professor Chanakas. Professor Chatziagorou at the closing ceremony, where the 5 best posters from the 269 participating in the conference, one for each thematic section, were awarded.
39th European Cystic Fibrosis Conference in Basel, Switzerland
For another year, the Greek delegation, with health scientists and representatives of Cystic Fibrosis patients, participated in the 39th European Cystic Fibrosis Congress, which took place in Basel, Switzerland from 8 to 11 June with the participation of more than 2,000 health scientists.

The audience watched as Professor Diana Bilton was presented with an award by Professor KrisDeBoek, President of the European Cystic Fibrosis Scientific Association ECFS, for her research interests and outstanding contribution to the care of adults with cystic fibrosis and her career as Director of the largest cystic fibrosis centre in the UK, the Royal Brompton Hospital. In parallel, the European Cystic Fibrosis Patients’ Association, CFEurope, established the first ever ‘patient support’ award. CFEurope and Jacquelien Noordhoek, President of the Dutch C.F. Patients’ Association, awarded Snezana Bojcin, from the C.F. Patients’ Association of Skopje, for her outstanding efforts and support for C.F. patients in her country, highlighting the need for effective patient representation.

After the ceremony,
but also during the conference, there was a strong emphasis on personalisation of treatment, as treatment to be effective must be personalised and unique for each patient.Following the discoveries of innovative therapies targeting mutations, great importance was placed on clinical trials as well as patient compliance. The UK CF TRUST organisation CF TRUST presented a specific form for the monitoring and comparison of registry data by both health scientists and patients themselves, emphasising the importance of active patient involvement in treatment, its outcomes and clinical trials. Finally, a series of presentations and workshops on various topics related to physiotherapy, exercise, nutrition and psychology presented the latest developments on the multisystemicity of the disease.
Ms. Hatziagorou Elpida from the Department of Pediatrics C.F. of the Hippocratic Hospital of Thessaloniki participated with Mr. Tsanakas Ioannis in 3 talks and 2 posters, with an award as one of the five best posters among the 269 of the Conference!

his year again, actively participated not only with posters, but also with presentations and lectures, which were given by Mrs. Hatziagorou from the Pediatric Clinic of the Hippocratic Hospital of Thessaloniki. More specifically, the following participated with posters: Mr. Kantitis from the pediatric department of the Children’s Hospital “Agia Sophia”, Mr. Kotsifas and Mrs. Diamantea from the adult department of the Sismanoglio Hospital, Mrs. Fotoulaki from the Papageorgiou Hospital of Thessaloniki and Mrs. Hatziagorou from the pediatric department of the Hippocratic Hospital of Thessaloniki. In fact, the poster of Mr. Chanaka’s team was awarded as one of the 269 best posters of the conference!

The Greek delegation of representatives of patients with C.F.
Two days before the official opening of the scientific conference, the Greek delegation of the Greek Association of Patients with Cystic Fibrosis, CFEurope, attended the conference. Dimitris Kontopidis and Anna Spinou, President and General Secretary respectively of the Hellenic Association of Patients with CF, described the actions and problems that have developed in our country in the last year, while they were particularly congratulated for the organization of the Conference “Physiotherapy and Exercise in CF”, for their effective work and for their participation in the activities of the European community and for the timely information they provide. Dimitris Kontopidis, as a member of the PTC committee for the drug Ataluren, also participated in the information meeting on Ataluren held at the venue of the European Conference and continues to be in constant contact and updated on the approval process of this drug.
The Greek delegation, apart from the patient representatives, included the physiotherapist Stavros Giannakoulakos and the postgraduate student in Public Health Eleni Atsave.
Every year the Hellenic C.F. Association aims at the active participation of more representatives and health scientists in order to inform and educate. Eleni Atsave, as the Association’s communication officer and with a Master’s degree in Public Health, participated as the first Greek volunteer in a European Conference, winning the impressions. At the same time, Stavros Giannakoulakos, physiotherapist and scientific associate of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, attended a special two-day seminar- workshop on the latest developments in physiotherapy, where, as he said, the methods of physiotherapy applied in our country are in line with the modern techniques of European data.
The latest developments from ECFS 2016 will be presented by the Greek scientific community at the established annual Workshop in November 2016.
